When Bemidji State University’s For the North fundraising campaign began in 2023, we knew it would be big. We hoped it would be historic.
But we had no idea just how transformational Beavers around the globe were about to make it.
As of today, For the North has officially concluded. This targeted-initiative campaign was just the second in university history, following in the footsteps of the $36.5 million raised by the Imagine Tomorrow comprehensive campaign from 2011-16. Knowing For the North had a shorter run of three years, we set a $25 million goal.
It turns out we underestimated you.
Nearly 4,000 donors stepped forward and added to the incredible momentum taking place at BSU. Not only did we reach our goal, we soared past Imagine Tomorrow’s record with flying colors — especially the proud green and gold that we Beavers don.
We’re still hard at work tallying up every penny raised during this campaign, so stay tuned for more numbers soon. But I can tell you this right now: For the North raised over $37 million, making it a university record and one of the largest higher education fundraisers in the history of northern Minnesota.
To all who have joined us in this endeavor: Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Personally, I’ve found myself in situations I never thought I’d be in throughout this journey. From Replant Our Roots to supporting the vision of R. Allen Sunderman through the first naming of a BSU college, this campaign has pushed me outside my comfort zone in the best ways. Our donors come from all walks of life, and it’s a privilege to explore both what makes them unique and their shared commitment to Bemidji State.
Our staff has also been spectacular during this season. Whether on the frontlines of fundraising and building relationships or working behind the scenes to facilitate the fine details, the Alumni & Foundation team has been in all corners of Minnesota and the country to maximize the impact of this campaign. I couldn’t be prouder of the work they’ve poured in, and I hope our alumni and friends have felt it with every interaction.
But the most rewarding aspect of this work is to see the impact YOUR generosity has had on our students. At the end of the day, we are here because they are here. For the North was built with BSU students in mind — and designed for all of them to reap the rewards today and throughout their careers.
The Alumni & Foundation has always been committed to providing greater access, equity, and experience for all who enroll at Bemidji State University. And if For the North has proven anything, it’s that your commitment runs just as deep.
Thank you for believing in this university. Thank you for investing in its students. Thank you for showing what it means to be a Beaver. And thank you for inspiring me by so passionately being For the North.
Sincerely,

Allyssa “A.J.” Joseph
BSU Alumni & Foundation executive director
