When Brendan Harms and Tommy Muck peruse the Bemidji Town & Country Club grounds at the Galen Nagle Memorial Golf Tournament, they’re greeted by the Bemidji State men’s hockey alumni who came before them.
Harms, a 2017 graduate, and Muck, who finished his BSU stint in 2020, are often asked about their ongoing professional hockey careers.
Recently, they’ve told the elder Beavers about life in Europe.
“The tradition runs deep in the program,” Muck said. “You don’t realize it until you’re out of it. It’s cool to see the guys who graduated 20 years before you, and they ask you about what you’re doing and where you’re playing. It’s sharing those experiences that makes it fun and meeting the people who paved the path before you.”
Both Harms and Muck played several pro seasons in North America, but when a new lane cleared, they jumped at opportunities that took them halfway around the world to play the game they love.
Muck and Harms aren’t unique. Dozens of former Beavers have left their mark in pro leagues across different continents. And while each professional career path differs, their Bemidji ties are still strong.
The Galen Nagle Memorial Golf Tournament brings BSU men's hockey alumni, current athletes, coaches and program supporters to the BTCC annually to raise funds for Beaver Hockey.
Harms and Muck are regular attendees, and they were there for the 2025 installment on July 18.
“I’m fortunate to only live about three and a half hours from Bemidji, so it’s a quick trip for me,” Harms said. “I love it, I love the guys. I have a group of guys I play with every year from my four years in Bemidji. But it’s cool to see the guys. When I got to Bemidji, I met a few of the guys from the group who had just graduated. It’s fun to see those guys again, along with some even older guys.
“It’s fun to catch up and meet some new guys every year. It’s fun to talk about Tom (Serratore) because everybody’s got a story about Tom. You get to meet some of the current players, which is really cool. You get to see how far the program has come.”
After the carousel-like hockey journeys Harms and Muck have experienced, they confidently credited much of their success to their development at Bemidji State.
