The Gordy Skaar Memorial Golf Tournament has officially hit seven digits.
The Bemidji State University summer staple, which has supported Beaver Athletics since 1977, crossed over the $1 million threshold in all-time fundraised dollars on June 20.
“Surpassing $1 million in all-time support through the Skaar is a powerful testament to the decades-long commitment our donors have made to BSU student-athletes,” said Jesse Katz, the Alumni & Foundation’s director of athletic giving and sponsorships. “This milestone reflects a proud tradition of generosity, community spirit and belief in the impact that athletics can have on the student experience.”
A total of 130 golfers banded together at the Bemidji Town & Country Club and raised a total of $51,000 at this year’s event. The winning team consisted of Jean Baer, Teddy Belisle, Jeremy Fayette, Joe Moosbrugger and Kristin Torgerson.
The tournament also featured a speech from Gordy Skaar — the son of the tournament’s namesake — and an appearance from Isaac Severts, the current recipient of the Gordy Skaar Memorial Athletic Scholarship. Golfers then stormed the course and continued a tradition that’s spanned nearly 50 years at Bemidji State.
The mission behind the Skaar hasn’t changed, but its impact keeps expanding.
“This year’s tournament was a tremendous success thanks to the incredible support from our sponsors, alumni and community members who showed up in full force to back Beaver Athletics,” Katz said. “The funds they raised will make a huge impact by providing critical scholarship support for our student-athletes — enhancing their experience both on and off the field.”
