Proud past. Digital present.

History in the Pines is the digital museum of Bemidji State University. It was built to preserve and celebrate BSU's past, which proudly spans over 100 years and includes more than 50,000 alumni, while also centralizing content into a single, public location.

Drawing from both university archives and private collections, History in the Pines includes thousands of pieces of unique content for you to discover.

Within the interactive database, visitors can explore campus traditions and landmarks, browse through decades of photos and play BSU-themed games. The online museum also features Bemidji State pioneers, long-lost athletics history, immersive articles on a wide variety of stories and more. We like to think there’s a rabbit hole for everyone.

The archive, named after Bemidji State's "University in the Pines" moniker, launched in January 2024 and will continue to grow over time through new history and new submissions.

History in the Pines is completely free to use. Likewise, submitting your own materials for inclusion in the collection is free and highly encouraged.

The work of the late Dr. Arthur O. “Art” Lee – a professor emeritus at BSU and unofficially the grandfather of Bemidji State history – was instrumental in the creation of History in the Pines. Lee taught from 1959-1995 and in 1994 authored the book “University in the Pines,” which is considered the definitive historical narrative of Bemidji State University.

The Alumni & Foundation would also like to extend deep gratitude to the Bemidji Pioneer, Lakeland PBS, the Beltrami County Historical Society and countless individuals for their contributions to this collection.

History in the Pines is curated by Micah Friez, the Bemidji State Alumni & Foundation's communications coordinator. He can be reached at micah.friez@bemidjistate.edu or at 218-755-2779.
