As a first-generation college student from a small town, it was on me to learn how to apply for college, fill out the FAFSA to receive financial aid and create a personal budget. Navigating the transition from high school to college was challenging to say the least, and I did not know what to expect. Upon arriving on campus, I finally received the support I needed through Bemidji State University's Student Support Services, designed specifically for first-generation students like me. While navigating my way to college on my own has taught me how to be independent and self-motivated, BSU has also provided me with the support I need to succeed.
I have been drawn to the social work field since elementary school. As a youth who was able to receive the treatments I needed because of an adult advocate, I knew that was a role I’d like to take on. This is why I am pursuing my degree in social work as a child welfare scholar. In my studies and trainings, I have learned so much about the Indian Child Welfare Act and the Minnesota Indian Child Welfare Act and how important it is to Native culture to keep families together due to the historical trauma of forced assimilation. Learning about this history and working directly with American Indian children at the local Boys & Girls Club of the Bemidji Area has made me passionate about continuing the work that keeps Native families together. Because BSU is uniquely surrounded by the three largest American Indian tribal nations in the state, it is critical to apply these principals if I wish to work in this field in the Bemidji area.
I chose BSU because of its relative proximity to my hometown, because it’s in a community that provides me with the experiences I need in my field and because its campus is filled with professors and staff that make themselves available for any questions. They care about me and my education.
In addition to the amazing support services, I also receive an academic scholarship that allows me to spend more time on my studies so I can finish my degree and begin making a difference
in the lives of children. This is why we are asking our biggest supporters to donate to the Lakeside Fund. I work at the BSU Alumni & Foundation part-time and have appreciated learning that the support I have received is directly impacted by the donations made to this fund.
Please help us reach our goal of $400,000 by making a year-end gift to the Lakeside Fund today. Your gift will ensure that BSU continues to deliver the services and support for students like me to thrive in our future careers.
