Bemidji State University students earned fourth place at this year’s 2024 Cornhusker Case Competition in Lincoln, Neb.

The team demonstrated exceptional skills in marketing strategy, teamwork and problem-solving during the competition. Competing against larger schools from Texas, Maryland, Oklahoma, Kansas and beyond, BSU’s team advanced to the finals and secured an impressive fourth place – a testament to their dedication and expertise.

The competition tasked teams with developing an innovative revitalization plan for the Discovery Zoo. The BSU team, which included Rachel Harris, Kiersten Flaig, Jaxon Leindecker and Bryce Fabian, proposed a vision for the zoo’s future, suggesting innovative attractions like augmented reality learning hubs, interactive animal habitats and eco-friendly transport solutions to enhance visitor engagement and support the zoo’s conservation efforts.

Reflecting on the team’s performance, Dr. Kelly La Venture, associate professor of marketing, praised the group for their intense preparation and adaptability.

“In just two weeks, our team came together with students who had only just met, working to leverage each other’s strengths and build a cohesive strategy,” she said. “This type of collaboration is invaluable, not only in competitions but in the workplace, where employers seek graduates with practical problem-solving skills and the ability to thrive in interdisciplinary teams.”

The competition provided BSU students with the opportunity to apply classroom concepts to a high-stakes, real-world challenge. Dr. Eric Forsyth, professor and internship coordinator in BSU’s Sport Management program, shared his admiration for the team’s dedication.

“I was incredibly proud of our team’s commitment, preparation and perseverance,” he said. “They represented BSU superbly, receiving compliments from advisors across the country. Although they didn’t take home a trophy, they are champions in my book.”

For the team, the experience went beyond competition; it was a chance to grow as professionals. Leindecker highlighted the importance of the experience, saying, “It’s always a privilege representing BSU, this time on a stage larger than ever before.” Fabian added, “It was a great opportunity to compete with larger schools and put BSU on the map.”

Harris expressed her pride in the team’s work, stating, “This was an awesome, educational and team-building event. I loved working with everyone and figuring out the best way to come up with a solution together. I loved representing BSU and what we stand for.”

With their performance and professional growth at the Cornhusker Case Competition, Team BSU exemplified the excellence and ambition that characterize Bemidji State University’s marketing program.

“This was a truly great experience,” Flaig said. “Our team collaboration throughout the process made it possible to compete and even surpass some of the bigger schools in the U.S. Hard work and determination pay off.”
