With a resounding “WHAP” of his tail against the Lake Bemidji waters, a new candidate has loudly announced himself as a frontrunner to become the next president of the United States.
Seasoned mascot and first-time politician Bucky the Beaver has entered the presidential election after gaining an endorsement from the up-and-coming Beaver Party. Bucky will be a strong nominee for office and projects to seriously challenge the conventional candidates for president.
“Bucky’s late arrival into the presidential race is unprecedented, but it’s a very real possibility that he can secure enough votes to win,” election expert Polly Ticks said. “The American people want a voice like Bucky’s to lead them.”
The soft-spoken but always enthusiastic beaver sees now as the right time to get involved. Bucky’s core beliefs are reflected in the platform he is running on: Bemidji State enthusiasm, community engagement and pride for all beaverkind. While his values are often associated most strongly with BSU’s students and alumni, as well as those in the Bemidji area, Ticks and other experts don’t see his platform as too niche for a national stage. Because Bucky resonates with so many, she foresees the country as a whole getting swept up in the so-called “Beaver Fever.”
“I’ve only ever seen this once before,” Ticks said, “and that was when they sliced bread for the first time. Bucky could easily surpass that before it’s all said and done.”
Tracking the green and white states
Citizens who follow election results are used to seeing maps of red and blue states for those respectively won by Democratic and Republican nominees. This year, they can also expect to see green and white for states won by Bucky.
Although Bucky has a reasonable chance to win in all 50 states and in Washington, D.C., his campaign manager expects the strongest polling to come in the regions with the most Bemidji State alumni. Based on those projections, Bucky should gain a combined 23 electoral votes through Minnesota (35,466 alumni), North Dakota (1,300) and Wisconsin (880).
Additional states with over 500 BSU graduates include Arizona (766), Florida (725), California (701), Texas (591) and Colorado (518). With support also expected to arrive there, Bucky will have a head start of 168 electoral votes.
“Bemidji State alumni are in all 50 states,” said Cedar the Beaver, the Bucky for President campaign manager. “We trust that they will set the tone, show their Beaver Pride and help win this election for Bucky.”
A beaver has never been named president of the United States.
Should he be elected, Bucky has pledged to maintain his duties at BSU. He plans to commute from Bemidji to Washington D.C. via a new underground tunnel stretching directly from Deputy Hall to the White House.
