It was an edge-of-your-seat, down-to-the-wire, nail-biting kind of contest, and one that won’t soon be forgotten.

In dramatic fashion, the Green Sox held off the rival Whitecaps 8-7 to win the inaugural Bucky’s Celebrity Softball Game on Tuesday, June 11, at the BSU softball field in front of a packed house.

The startup event, hosted by the Bemidji State University Alumni & Foundation as part of its Community Appreciation Day series, featured two dozen local celebrities and personalities to face off. The five-inning showcase featured smiling faces, big hits and highlight catches, and a trick or two up Bucky’s sleeve.

In a pitcher’s duel between President John L. Hoffman and Dr. Joy Hoffman, the teams traded blows and found themselves in a late 7-7 tie. But Green Sox slugger Danny Schmidt blasted the go-ahead home run in the fourth inning to score the decisive run for his squad – which also gave Joy Hoffman the last laugh over her husband.

Bucky’s Celebrity Softball Game will return next summer on June 10, 2025.
