As the snow starts falling around campus, we’ve firmly entered into the season of giving. And today, Giving Tuesday, and through the end of the year, you can take part in the annual holiday spirit by making a year-end donation to Bemidji State University.
Giving Tuesday is a global generosity movement created in 2012 to transform individual communities and the world as a whole. It’s for everyone and by everyone, meaning you have a role to play.
There are many advantages to giving. First, there’s a financial incentive when you make a tax-deductible donation. A gift to a qualified charitable organization – like the BSU Alumni & Foundation – may allow individuals to reduce their taxable income and lower tax liabilities, which could result in significant savings. Consult a tax advisor for specific questions.
But more than the financial gains, people who give generously are happier. Multiple studies have proven that those who give more experience greater life satisfaction than those who do not. When you give to a not-for-profit, you directly support a cause you view as vital.
And that’s on top of the goodwill you spread. By donating to Bemidji State, you’re making a life-changing difference to students who rely on your support.
How can I make a year-end gift?
There are several ways to make a year-end gift at BSU.
The easiest is right here on our website. Visit our giving home page to find a cause that’s near and dear to your heart, or specify exactly where you want your dollars to go by clicking below.
Another way to give is through an IRA charitable rollover. An IRA rollover allows people age 70.5 and older to reduce their taxable income by making a gift directly from their IRA.
You can also give through a donor advised fund. You can use a donor advised fund to distribute gifts to numerous charities. With a DAF, you can make gifts to charity during your lifetime, and when you pass away, your children can carry on your legacy of giving.

Finally, you can go the old fashioned route, as well. Enjoy a face-to-face interaction and a handshake when you stop by our offices and deliver a check or cash. We’re located at 1501 Birchmont Drive NE in Bemidji, and we’re open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.
To qualify for deductions in the current tax year, your donations must come before end-of-year deadlines. This is typically at the end of December but can vary depending on the type of contribution and the tax regulations.
If you have any questions about making your year-end gift to BSU, don’t let them go unanswered! Give us a call at 218-755-2143 or send us an email at foundation@bemidjistate.edu, and we’d be happy to help.
We can’t wait to partner with you this holiday season. Thank you for considering Bemidji State – and particularly our students – when planning your year-end gift.
